😡 Oh no! 😡

NOO!.PNG

No! I am very upset, instead of moving up I moved down. This is very disappointing, because all year we have been learning about ACCELERATION and I have not even moved up- one level. Anyways, I tried my best and I guess it wasn’t enough to get me to a higher level. Like my teacher says I need to pick up the paste.

Descriptive Paragraph-Fireworks

Boom! A colorful substance flies into the sky making a loud noise, then not long after sounds of excitement start to appear. While watching it go ka-boom so many colors lit up the sky, it was beautiful indeed. Then we came across the biggest one of all, nervously burning the wick and running away. As soon as it flew up at that very moment our eyes opened as wide as a crocodile's mouth. With a taste of smoke in my mouth I agreed to not open my mouth while it was being lit, because trust me smoke doesn’t taste good at all.A hint of gunpowder flew up my nose. The loud sounds almost sounded like explosions from a war. Feeling the heat on my hands and arms, felt very relaxing because of its warmness. The flashes from the rectangular shaped box almost made me blind. Thrills filled the air, that was a very explosive night.

One-step addition and subtraction equation

Maths-1.PNG
This was a screenshot I took when i got 100% on my 1 step equation quiz. It was very easy doing this quiz because it was only addition and subtraction in this quiz. Next time I am hoping to do another quiz, one much more challenging.

This morning I did a prototec test to see if I have accelerated in my basic facts. I have not accelerated and I am really disappointed. Going from 97% to 77% is not good at all. To accelerate in basic facts I am going to learn some more about fractions and percentage because that is what I struggle on. I also wish to get a higher score than 77% as well.

Social media - Youtube

Youtube is a very popular site that I use because of what it can do. It can be used to watch any type of video, such as music videos, funny videos and educational videos. Sometimes I use it to watch the video blog of the youtube channels I subscribed to.  Youtube can be watched on anything, like a phone, tablet, computer and ps4, specifically anything connected to the internet.  You can also use it to write what you think about the video you just watched.  When you are bored at home you can watch youtube to make you smile.

Chemical change-Pancakes

WALHT: Write a paragraph on chemical change.

Today room 8 and I made a chemical change, by cooking pancakes. The first thing of this process was combining all of the ingredients to make a slimy type of batter, while our teacher was preheating the stove. When the stove was all heated up we melted the butter and started cooking the pancakes. While the pancakes were cooking we could smell its delicious scent and see the bubbles, which was releasing gas. I know this was a chemical change because all of the signs went according to the scientific method.

Diwali-Rangoli Patterns

Diwali is a Hindu celebration that runs for 5 days and is the celebration of light. It is a wonderful festival and a lot of people love celebrating it. Most people believe that Diwali honors Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. For most Hindus Diwali marks a new year. Everyone dresses up in bright colored clothes. Everyone lightens up their houses by putting up candles, lanterns and electric lights up around their houses. Diwali is the biggest celebration in India.

When you buy new clothes for Diwali you must have a bath and cleanse your skin, washing away all the evil from your past. The clothing you wear to the festival must be bright colored. During this celebration women would be in the kitchen cooking up a huge meal for their loved ones. They also light up fireworks and give gifts to their neighbors and friends. Hindus also clean their houses because they believe that the Gods are coming to visit them.  They also draw rangoli patterns outside of their door because it shows that people are welcome. Traditionally they use broken rice or powder to do the rangoli patterns.

Today in the reading session Room 8 drew their own rangoli patterns. We used chalk instead of broken rice and powder because we didn’t have that. In the images at the top there is some of the rangoli patterns that we drew with the chalk. While Natalia and I were drawing our rangoli pattern it was quite hard because we ran out of space, but we managed to finish our pattern. Drawing the rangoli patterns was really fun!.

This afternoon I learnt that Diwali is the festival of light and is the biggest celebration in India. I also learnt that Diwali in English means “rows of light” and also how to make rangoli patterns.

Simple machines - Storyboard strip

This is a storyboard strip I made about how I made my simple machine. For my simple machine project I made a scale with two pulleys. It really works, and I was glad to hear my teacher saying nice things about my homemade scale.

Matific

This morning my teacher told us to play matific. Matific is a maths game we play in the morning. At the beginning of the game it was really easy, but as we got to higher levels it got harder and harder. But some activities have really taught me new things, that I haven't learnt before.

Lifting someone with his thumb

So one day Mr Hendricks came into room eight and said he had a challenge for us.  He said that he was going to lift the heaviest person in room eight. We didn't believe him until he showed us. While we were out side he came out with a lever and a long piece of wood. He put the long piece of wood on the lever and told Sive to get onto the other end. When Sive got on the other end he pushed the wood down with his thumb. We were so amazed how he used a simple machine to life the heaviest person in our class with his thumb.

Simple machines

The focus for this term is simple machines. So since our topic is simple machines, my teacher said to make a simple machine of our own at home using a pulley or wheel and axle. In my simple machine I used two bobbin's to act a two pulleys. My simple machine I have created is a old school scale, I also used materials that I had a home. Here are some of the things I used to make my simple machine:

1. Wooden hanger
2. One Toilet roll
3. Two bobbin's
4. Two Plastic cups
5. Five key rings
6. Different sizes of rope
7. A small piece of salafain

Making this simple machine was really hard but I got help from my aunty. So without her help I wouldn't have completed my simple machine. When I was done with my simple machine I decided to help a friend with her simple machine, she made a well with a pulley too.

Yummy Nacho's - Food tech

On Monday, the year 7's and 8's went to Tamaki College for technology. I was in cooking class with room 8's year 8's. So on that Monday we made nacho's.  We first cooked the mince with baked beans. Then our technology teacher sorted out the chips on the plate and afterwards we poured the mince on top of it, and sprinkled some cheese on top.  We had to clean up before eating the food. It was really fun cooking this and I am going to try it at home.

Importance of fire drills

Why is there a need for a fire drill/safety?

Fire drills should be common all around the world. Everyone should have a practise fire drill every once and awhile. You can have fire drills at home and at school, for the safety of students and staff at school or small families in their houses. There are lot’s of reasons why fire drills are important, and here are three examples.

Firstly, people die in fire related incidents because they didn’t know how to react in that type of situation. So having a fire drill can teach someone how to react in a real fire, and know where to go when it happens.  Fire drills can also teach a person how stay calm in a fire situation and know what to do when this comes to be apart of their lives.

Secondly, fire drills can be a life lesson to everybody, because most people panic in a fire situation. So a fire drill will also teach them how to be confident in a real fire situation. When a fire has started in a place where you are then you will be confident enough to do what you are suppose to do.

Lastly, knowing how to react in a real fire can help other people too. So in a related fire situation and people don’t know what to do you can help them by telling them what you learnt from a practise fire drill you have participated in.  Basicly it is also teaching them what you learnt.

There are many more reasons why fire drills are important and know you know three of them. While you are at home or with some friends you can also tell them the importance of having fire drills, and they don’t always need to be at school they can be at home too.

Morning maths - Integers

Screenshot 2017-08-10 at 9.37.14 AM.png

In the morning I played a math game that our teacher set out for us. This was an easy game. I feel that this game wasn’t challenging for my mind and I wish to play a more challenging game next time.My knowledge on integers really has increased in these past few days. But playing this game I got a better understanding of subtracting and adding positive and negative numbers.

E Te Ariki - Maori lesson

At about 12:15 Ms Maude came to our classroom to teach us a maori song.  We learnt a song called E te ariki, and it was a hymn.  She comes every Tuesday to teach us maori, the maori word for hymn is himene.  It was really fun learning and singing this song, we had some laughs while learning it.  When Ms Maude comes back next week we are going to go over the song again and she is also going to teach us a karakia (Prayer).

Mince and cheese pie

Today at tech we finished the second part of our pie.  We melted the mince and cut out the pastry into a circle and filled our pie plates.  This was really fun, but we had a pastry malfunction. Our pastry got to soft and it got stuck to our chopping board. The pie was very delicious and I want to try and make this at home with my mum. I also got to decorate my pie a little bit.

Help from Room 8 boys

This morning Mr Hendricks popped into our classroom and asked for eight strong boys. So after Mrs Ramkolowan picked the boys, they were just outside the hall trying to remove all of the logs that was placed there.  After I saw them bringing it onto the senior side of the school I was told that they are trying to build a volleyball court on the white squares, because our field is full of water and we can’t play on the grass.  We have been practising a lot and we need a volleyball court to practise also.

Football skills

Football

Okeii.jpg

Football is a well known sport from around the world.  It is played with eleven players and you you have to get it into the opponent's goal. The rules are simple, and it is played on a soccer field.  There are a lot of skills you need to learn before you start playing the actual game.

This morning my class and I went to the hall for a soccer lesson with our coach Steve.  He taught us some skills that you can use in the actual game. He taught us these following skills 1. Kicking/passing with your outer foot
2. Kicking/passing with your lace/inner foot
3. Kicking/passing with your sole
4. Putting your body between the ball and opponent
These are the skills he taught us, I know how to do some of them but I need more practise.

The only sport that I play is netball and the only way football can relate to netball is how in football you run and in netball you run too. So netball and football don’t have much in common and I can't really compare the two sports.

During our football lesson I had a lot of fun. So the aim of the first game we played was to kick someone else's ball out of the square and if it went out then they lost a point.  Then after that warm up game we played an actual mini game of football and he split us up into four groups and swapped us on and off.

Football is a very fun game to play and I am glad I got to learn a few skills from our coach Steve.  He has taught us some skills and I am willing to learn more next week when he comes for another teaching lesson.

Meat filling - Tech class,T3 W2

Today at tech we made our filling for our mince and cheese pie. To make the mince and cheese pie you have to make the filling first and then make the pastry for the pie, so you have two lessons during this process. While I was making the filling my eyes hurt really badly because I was the person cutting up the onions. I am so excited to make this pie, I think it is going to taste wonderful.

Matariki poem

I made this post based on the celebration "Matariki".  Matariki is the maori new year. So they celebrate it by having feasts and cooking hangis.  Also telling the myths and legends to the the children.  They sometimes tell the stories about their past and their ancestors.

Bacon and egg quiech

Yesterday at tech we made a bacon and egg quiche. It was really fun working with my buddy Heather. We first had to get our ingredients and make our dough. Then we chopped up some onions and bacon for our filling and then cracked 3 eggs into a bowl of cream. After placing our quiche into the oven we waited, and then it came out and we halved it.

Volume and capacity

Screenshot 2017-06-20 at 09.35.49.png
This site was about finding the volume in the shape.  Some questions were difficult but most of them were easy.  I still need more practice on volume and capacity because my understanding isn’t quite clear.

Screenshot 2017-06-20 at 10.02.18.png
The Khan Academy activities were really easy.  I think it was a great site because if you were stuck on a question there are clues to help you. After doing all the questions I check my score and got 9/10. This shows the questions were not that hard to answer and it didn’t challenge my mind
Screenshot 2017-06-20 at 10.04.51.png

This activity was really easy. You had to pick how high you wanted your box to be, pick the dept of it and pick the height.  After you picked all the things you needed to figure out the area of the cube you made.

Visualizing - Reading T2W7

Text: The soft fur of the dog felt like silk against my skin and her black coloring glistened as it absorbed the sunlight, reflecting it back as a perfect, deep, dark mirror.

Drawing:

The text at the top is the text  was visualising.  So what I visualised in my head I put it onto a google drawing. Our focus for this week was to read the text and create a moving inside you head. I think that this lesson was easy for me, and next I'd like to learn how to visualise text without that much information.

Measuring angles

Earlier this week we were measuring angles.  Before this our teacher put tape on some desks and we had to measure the triangles.  We used our protractors to measure it and most of the angles were acute and obtuse.  I had to work with Huntah while doing this maths exercise.
